The Post and Beam Garage...

While all the home construction is going on, Rick and Andy have been hard at work in preparation for the garage. No it won't be logs! Andy is a wizard at post and beam construction and the decision was made ages ago that he and Rick would tackle the garage as their summer project.

Over the winter Andy found some "old barn" beams...really fantastic pieces of lumber oozing character and the "patina of a bye-gone era". We made an offer and they were ours to pick up and cart away. We'd purchased some rough sawn pine from a local Amish Family and brought it to the meadow to dry. Those piles kept growing...

The old beams themselves were moved here to The Fort but proved to be too massive to store at our rented home. They then traveled to Dan's field next to his workshop and the notching was all done there. Several weeks passed, and finally they were brought to Nicholville. They now sit on our garage slab, waiting for construction to begin.

Gosh - I'm anxious to see this. We're trying to decide about a garage for next year...

Stay tuned...I'm quite interested myself...The plan seems great. Having the wood sawn from logs for the siding should really compliment the logs. And as the front dormer will be close to the same material (front dormer is not logs...although the back dormer is) I feel it will all just go together.

We did the same thing in our first log home...made a detached garage board and batten just like the dormers. It always looked great!
